The 1% Daily Improvement Rule

I’m now a believer in regularity.

This is after many trials and failures, and attempts at improving my personal life.

It used to be like: I’d like to achieve certain goals, and I’d set them, but in the end, they weren’t achieved, or I’d drifted away.

Setting out new goals has always been interesting and exciting for me, as my natural tendency is an “idea-smart” guy. However, keeping my eyes focused on the goals and continue to proceed as time goes by, has been challenging.

The cycling and back and forth between goals set and goals not achieved had been troubling and painful, and I started to look for solutions.

That’s when I learned of James Altucher’s daily 1% improvement rule: try to improve an area in life just 1% a day, and the compounded results will be tremendous.

The math is also simple: if just 1% improvement is done a daily, after 365 days it’ll be 3778%.

Similar ideas have been also suggested by success coach Darren Hardy in his book The Compound Effect.

How I’ve realized this into my personal life and company culture is that, I’m now waking up at 4am to start my morning routine, which includes meditation, journeying, and exercise. Then our companies have fixed daily, weekly, and monthly sync-up to review and plan for key goals.

While it hasn’t been easy, I’d certainly attribute building up regular habits as an important reason of how I’m running three companies at once.

If you’d like to learn how to start, I’d highly recommend to start with Benjamin Hardy’s articles, and this video by Robin Sharma on “How to Wake Up Early.”
